Welcome to Basic Bislama! In this first lesson, your AI teacher Marie will introduce you to Bislama — the national language of Vanuatu.
What is Bislama? Bislama is a creole language spoken by over 270,000 people in Vanuatu. It's based on English but has its own unique grammar rules and vocabulary borrowed from French and local Melanesian languages.
Why Learn Bislama? - It's the lingua franca of Vanuatu — the language that connects over 100 islands - There are more than 130 local languages in Vanuatu, so Bislama is how people communicate - It's easier to learn than you think! Many words come from English
Key Features of Bislama: 1. Words are spelled phonetically (how they sound) 2. Grammar is simpler than English — no conjugations! 3. The word "blong" replaces possessives (my, your, his) 4. The word "long" is used for location and direction 5. The subject marker "i" comes before the verb
Don't worry — we'll cover all of these in detail throughout the course!
